Independent travel, sport, activity holidays, flights and more ...

What better way to capture the beauty and scenery of Turkey than on a specialist photographic break staying in Kayakoy, a abandoned Greek village.  The accommodation is superb, the photo opportunities on offer in the area are endless and the tuition fantastic.  We run the holiday in conjunction with Saffran and Gunays Garden (See Gunays Garden for details on the accommodation).

The holiday is flexible according to the needs of the small, intimate group (no more than 10). You can rest assured that whatever you want to cover will be addressed throughout the week.  Faruk Akbas is a published Turkish photographer and his experience excellent, he will lead the group and the teachings.  His photos are known for drawing the most out of a landscape or portrait.  The itinerary may change due to requirements or weather conditions but as a guide please use the following example:

DAY 1: ARRIVAL (USUALLY MONDAY)

You are met from your Dalaman flight and brought by private minibus to Gunays Gardens in Kayakoy.  Here you will meet your team for the week—Faruk, Rebecca and Tolga.  The night is spent getting to know one another over dinner.

DAY 2: FETHIYE HARBOUR TOWN & MARKET, AFTERNOON IN UZUMLU MOUNTAIN VILLAGE

After breakfast at around 8.30am we travel to Fethiye, a working harbour town with large Tuesday Market offering a wealth of photographic opportunities.  The colour of the fruit and the village people offer a great deal of scope for portrait, still and life studies.  We hope that a whole feast of pictures will emerge, theres even the opportunity to return to study a similar market day on a Friday or Saturday.  We eat a local lunch in the market before packing up for our trip to Uzumlu.

At around 1pm we travel to Uzumlu, a pretty mountain village famed for its carpet weaving, tobacco plantations and local village characters.  We can take a trip to Cadianda (an ancient Roman ruin high in the forest) or wonder around the village taking shots of the locals as they go about their daily lives.  We travel back Kayakoy late afternoon to enjoy a quick image session in the restaurant and a wealth of food and discussions over dinner.

DAY 3: EARLY MORNING IN KAYA VALLEY, GEMILER ISLAND FOR SEA SCAPES AND A MONESTRY FOR A BREATHTAKING HILLSIDE VIEW.

We are woken early for our tour around the Kaya Valley. A fascinating walk around the ruins and beyond with the early morning light just perfect for that eerie ghost town shot.  We head back for a late breakfast at around 10am.  We then move on by bus and boat to Gemiler Island, a great chance for taking sea scapes, exploring and photographing the ruins and macro work in this quiet, pretty location.

Back ashore in the afternoon we take a short drive and 30 minute uphill walk to Af Kule monastery, a tranquil, remote place where you can test your skills against one of the most dramatic locations you will find here in Turkey.  This should really prove to be a good day for great sunset shots and coaslines.

We return to Gunays Garden to shower before heading for a traditional dinner at one of the local village restaurants.

DAY 4: BABADAG MOUNTAIN & FARALYA FOR SPORTING, MOUNTAIN AND COASTAL SHOTS

Baba Dag is our first location. A 2000m mountain above Olu Deniz. In season we may get some great shots of Paragliders jumping off the mountain, or some wild life in the rocks. If the group is willing for another early start, possibilities are multiplied, if not, there is tons of scope on this high level day.  Lunch taken on the mountain and then down to coastal Faralya for some coastal landscapes, Olu Deniz for beach/sea side shots or possibly a drop off in Olu Deniz and a two hour slow walk back to Kaya Koy over the pine clad hills offering unsurpassed views of the Mediterranean, the Blue Lagoon and Kaya Village bathed in warm red light as the sun goes down over Gemiler.

An alternative is a drive to Dip Koy, even deeper into rural Turkey a landscape of terraced mountainsides a broad valley with marble quarries and remote communities. A great photographic canvas. Gunays Garden for dinner and evening meeting/show. Discussion regarding tomorrow...

DAY 5:  UP FOR DISCUSSION

We try and be flexible about this valuable time. You will have had a flavour of the area and locations and may want to return to one or more of them. We reserve the veto on this day in case there is a difference of needs we cannot oblige fully. If everyone agrees, we can repeat or revisit a place or even visit a new place for similar subject matter.

In the event of our decision prevailing:  We travel for about 45 minutes into the low foothills of the mountains around Gocek for some stunning scenery, rivers, fauna and flora and anything that crops up en route. Lunch taken at a picturesque location or may even be as guest of a local family. The afternoon at the quayside in Gocek Bay for boats, street scenes with a difference and hopefully a stunning sunset.

Back to Gunay's Garden to freshen up, dinner and evening discussions on the days work.

Day 6:  CHOICE OF 2 OPTIONS

The morning will be spent in one of two ways. Faruk will run two sessions:

· The first session from 8.30 -10.30am will take place in the abandoned village and concentrate on one topic such as choosing the right viewpoint or taking a theme like dilapidation or close up of detail in flora or a carving, mural, stonework etc.

· The second session from 11.30 - 1.30 will cover choosing the right image from your work. Based in the restaurant Faruk will answer any questions you have not had the chance to pose or re ask questions where the answer will help everyone.

Alternatively, you may like to visit the market or spend the morning as the afternoon managing your portfolio. After lunch, you may like to select from your portfolio your favorite shot in the following categories:  Landscape/seascape, Portrait/people shot, Close-up/macro, Humorous/unusual, Low light , Informative Worst shot of the week

Faruk will say good-bye to us this evening though we are sure many will return, this is a photographic heaven at any time of the year.

Day 7 : FREE TIME

Free day - car hire available at £34 per day. Suggestions for the day range from shopping in Fethiye, to a Turkish bath/health spa day/hairdressers (exceptional skill and service at very low prices) to exploring some ancient ruins, geological sites or just relaxing in the local area. There is another market in Fethiye (Saturday) if some guests wish to return (note a different location) We have maps of the places you can reach easily in a day and can make suggestions on new locations and what you will be able to see and do.

We can arrange a whole day boat/Gulet trip in Fethiye bay for the whole group on this day. In hot weather, this is a highlight of any trip to the Turquoise Coast. There is an extra charge of £20 per person for this day inclusive of transport, lunch and the services of the crew.

We meet for a final dinner at Gunays Garden.
